11/26/11, Mineola, NY - Sigma Beta Beta Chapter participated in The Salvation Army Red Kettle Project at Roosevelt Field Shopping Mall in Long Island NewYork. The purpose of the Red Kettle Project is to raise money to help families in need during the holiday season. This project runs throughout the year to help those who are less fortunate than others.
According to the Salvation Army Web Site, in 1891 Salvation Army Captain Joseph McFee was distraught because there were so many poor individuals in San Francisco that were hungry. During the holiday season, he wanted to provide a Christmas dinner for the destitute. He only had one major hurdle to overcome – funding the project. The idea came to him after long and careful thought. His thoughts drifted back to his sailor days in Liverpool, England.. He remembered how at Stage Landing, where the boats came in, there was a large iron kettle called “Simpson’s Pot” which passers-by tossed in a coin or two to help the needy. The next day Captain McFee placed a similar iron kettle at the Oakland Ferry Landing at the foot of Market Street. Beside the pot, he placed a sign that read “Keep The Pot Boiling”. He soon had the money to see that the needy people were properly fed at Christmas. Sigma Beta Beta Chapter is involved with the Salvation Army Red Kettle Project because this is a special community outreach program which assists with the needy in the community.

11/24/11, Bronx, NY – Sigma Beta Beta Chapter Feed The Veterans Program took place on Thanksgiving Day at The James J. Peters Medical Center in the Bronx, New York. The goal of the chapter was to support our veterans during the Thanksgiving Holiday. Betsy Faden CTRS, is the Recreation Therapist at the center was instrumental in the success of this program. The motto of the center is “Healthy Leisure Opportunities For All Veterans.”
Ms. Faden took us on a tour of the hospital wards at the center where we met the disabled veterans. One veteran in particular, Vietnam veteran George McGinnis was receptive to us. He was the only veteran that took a photo with us. Touring the different wards, and talking with the veteran men and women, gave us the feeling of being proud and thankful for their service of protecting the country. We greeted many veterans on Thanksgiving day and could see how excited they were to see us through their warm reception.
When the day was over, we said farewells to the veterans, Sigma Beta Beta Chapter was proud to be a participant of the Thanksgiving event. Feeding Our Veterans not only means providing food, but it also means dedicating your time and making a veterans Thanksgiving more meaningful. Thank you goes a long way. Now that’s “Food For Thought. “
